41:50
Thanks helpful
Elaine Rinfrette
44:50
I am in the same boat without being able to get into the office to address mail and applications
Tiffany Washington
45:08
COVID disrupted our plans to have a spring induction, too. Is there an opportunity to allow our spring graduates membership into Phi Alpha?
Claudia Thorne
45:47
Our formal induction will be next spring
Rochelle Bailey
46:01
So, what kind of things do you do for celebrations on-line?
Donna Cherry
46:25
Good question, Tiffany. I will make sure we catch this during the Q&A.
Julie Hopkins
46:26
Roll Tide Jay!
Michael Berghoef
47:05
online apps, great idea! Maybe we could see some examples and develop a "best practice" type template?
dolsonmorrison
47:10
I am hoping i can still submit the applications this summer for the graduates?
Sung-Ju Kim
47:13
From NC State: Can we have PDF version of the certification? Because we mailed the certification but it was damaged while delivering. The students request another copy of the certification. We do need to mail it but It cost and unsafe.
Suh Chen Hsiao
48:12
Yes, need to make my appointment to cut my hair and all the medical appt. I work harder at home than on campus. Yikes...
Elaine Rinfrette
48:35
We do online apps at Edinboro University of PA too
Dana Smith
48:38
HI Everyone,
Dana Smith
50:15
Sorry, I joined late. at the University of Houston-Downtown, we did our induction in the spring via Zoom and it was a great experience. Each student brought a candle to the screen and we did a full ceremony with a speaker. Certificates will be mailed.
Levetta
51:39
I love that idea as a project Jay.
Ann-Marie C. Buchanan
51:40
I’m a new advisor. Are there mandatory Phi Alpha activities to be done each year? I’m hearing activities that our Social Work Club (SHARE Club) handles, but I don’t know of specific Phi Alpha activities (other than Induction).
Michael Campbell
52:05
We shifted from Adobe Connect to Zoom and the students LOVE it; I have mixed opinions but I am happy to share if you want to reach out separately - Michael.Campbell03@Saintleo.edu
Ziblim Abukari
53:02
At Westfield State University in MA we also did a virtual induction ceremony in the spring with a guest speaker. It was well attended and the students were very appreciative. Certificates will be mailed to
Jay Gabbard
54:07
that's great Ziblim-I'd like to get some more info on that from you
Ziblim Abukari
55:02
Sure; zabukari@westfield.ma.edu
melissadbrown
55:05
I am a relatively new advisor, so am learning the rules. Is extending membership to the top 35% of sw students mandatory? Or can we create our own membership guidelines?
Elaine Rinfrette
55:39
No it's mandatory. I have explored this and that was very clearly stated
melissadbrown
55:46
Thank you
Dr. Addie McCafferty
56:39
Hello everyone! We did a virtual induction ceremony in which the inductees had a candle they lit during that part of the ceremony. They really enjoyed it. We also implemented virtual volunteering since COVID-19 impacted a lot of different areas.
Evelyn Tomaszewski - GMU
58:34
GMU convened a virtual zoom based ceremony, had them raise their hands for the pledge (and turn to those around them), made a list of names and read each one, and convened it just before the virtual Dept graduation. And of course - we did a walk-through with the IT gurus beforehand because there is always a glitch ;) ANd you just reminded me we had students type in I DO as well - and there were some really great encouraging comments as well.
Susan Campbell
59:07
At NSU Louisiana, we have a large percentage of online students. These students loved the online induction ceremony. The SW Club sponsors our food pantry. We started a yearly workshop and hope to continue it.
Jay Gabbard
59:23
That's great stuff-perhaps we should get some kind of best ideas document going for online induction ceremonies and then share that with membership
melissadbrown
59:25
A question for the moderator later for the Q & A--is the top 35% rule open for further discussion or review? Our graduating class is only 17-25 students per year, so reducing membership to only 4-6 students may not allow us to continue.
Dana Smith
59:47
Our service project in the spring was - collecting masks for senior adults that are members of a local community center. Students signed up online to say how many masks they would donate (they could buy them, make them, or ask someone to make them). Then we had a couple of collection dates and times in a parking lot where they passed by and dropped the masks in a box to stay physically distant. Then, the masks were delivered to the director of the senior center. It worked out well.
Donna Cherry
01:00:41
Yes to best ideas doc for inductions, Jay. I will be typing up suggestions from the chat window as well as from speakr
Rochelle Bailey
01:00:42
We have the same issue, Melissa Brown! We only have about 15 graduates per year.
Chris Heer, Seton Hall University
01:01:27
@Melissadbrown, we are small as well and we are an MSW program so advanced standing students have even less time to apply and be active.
Donna Cherry
01:01:32
re: 35% rule. I will ask Paul to address. Thanks!
Darrin Wright
01:03:27
35th percentile of GPA for undergrad or graduate
Jay Gabbard
01:03:51
Great info Laura!
Dr. Addie McCafferty
01:04:25
Thank you for sharing Laura!
Susan Campbell
01:05:30
Do you also have a social work club?
Tammy Molina-Moore
01:05:50
yes, we have both
Willa Casstevens (she, her, hers)
01:05:51
Yes, and also SAVE
Chris Heer, Seton Hall University
01:06:19
Yes, we have a Graduate Student Social Work group
Laura
01:06:34
We do have a social work club as well but it has a more local focus and meets on campus. There are a few online students who login at the same time.
Reinaldo Rojas
01:07:01
Yes. It becomes competitive. Social Work Club does a lot of events, which leaves Phi Alpha at times in the cold. Collaboration and communication is key.
Laura
01:07:01
I wish I had bought stock in Zoom, lol!
dolsonmorrison
01:07:16
OUr Chapter has a Canvas LMS page as well to communicate and house documents, meeting recordings, etc
Michael Berghoef
01:09:06
Competition / Collaboration between Phi Alpha and other Social Work Clubs/Association type student orgs would be a great topic for future discussion!
Krista Barrett
01:09:18
What do we do about signatures on the certificates? Since the officers are not able to sign
Jay Gabbard
01:09:53
I signed in one signature spot since one of our officers moved back to Estonia!
Laura
01:09:56
What I have done Krista is ask the officers if I have their permission to sign their name, and then I sign them.
Sarah Twitchell
01:10:23
Agree Michael! I'm here representing both.
Tiffany Washington
01:10:52
But are graduated students eligible for the open enrollment?
bernicegmckenny
01:10:58
What is the certificates are lost since the school has Been closed?
Tiffany Washington
01:11:10
Thanks!!
Elaine Rinfrette
01:12:00
It is a surprise to me to hear that certificates will be replaced for free as we have been charged for new ones when errors were made in spelling of the name by the National Office or certificates were damaged.
Yvonne Ruiz
01:12:17
I'm a new advisor. Historically, we induct students in their last semester based on their overall GPA. When do others induct students?
Mamta Ojha
01:12:30
We had to shut down and I was not able to send the membership form and request for medals and certificates/ pins . By when should we get this request to you.
dolsonmorrison
01:12:45
We do Fall, Winter and Spring inductions
Reinaldo Rojas
01:13:06
We induct in junior year, so students can be active during senior year.
Mamadou M. Seck
01:13:23
Mamadou Seck CSU OHIO
Elaine Rinfrette
01:13:26
The excel spread sheet was correct
Reinaldo Rojas
01:13:33
We only do Spring induction. Junior year.
Elaine Rinfrette
01:13:52
Will do
dolsonmorrison
01:13:56
I think it is important to induct after first semester for those Advanced Standing MSW students who can only be active one semester during grad school
Yvonne Ruiz
01:14:19
TY. I was wondering about the length of time so that students can participate in service.
Ziblim Abukari
01:15:17
We induct in junior year too; some students meet the eligibility in senior year and are inducted at the time
Yvonne Ruiz
01:15:56
So, it doesn't matter if they don't meet the eligibility 35% after their inducted?
Stacy Stokes Batts
01:16:00
New Advisor here: 1) how long do chapters have officers hold office (one year or per semester? 2) medals or chords? and 3) can membership merchandise be mailed directly to students homes?
ddodson
01:16:38
Is there a minimum number of students required for a chapter?
Claudia Thorne
01:16:41
Please share what is the average GPA cut off at 35%
Ziblim Abukari
01:17:16
Our officers are elected for one year
Chris Heer, Seton Hall University
01:17:17
We do Spring but again that limits advanced standing student participation so I may do Fall and Spring. Does anyone know if 4th year BSW grades can count for MSW advanced standing student admission to the Honor Phi Alpha?
Reinaldo Rojas
01:17:19
Office members is for one year. But if the student is graduating in fall, is ok to have that person for one semester. We do chords.
Francine Carter (she/her/hers)
01:17:24
Our chapter has a benefactor pay the inductees membership fee.
Rina Keller
01:17:37
can you define "class"? 35% of Social Work Majors? or of the class of inductees?
Deb Svoboda (she/her)
01:17:44
Can we talk a bit about the alumni recruitment and participation ?
bernicegmckenny
01:18:13
On an average, what would an approximate GPA?
Rochelle Bailey
01:18:38
What happens if someone meets requirements when they are inducted, but then no longer meets requirements in 2 semesters, etc.
Devon Ferguson
01:18:39
The language is vague. Top 35% of class sounds like it could mean university/college-wide.
Reinaldo Rojas
01:18:40
3.5?
April @ UT Nashville
01:18:44
I'd like more info on how MSW chapters integrate new BSW members on arrival into advanced standing. Just welcome at orientation and encourage to run for office or something else?
Susan Campbell
01:18:48
I unfortunately have to be the chauffeur for my kiddos. This meeting was very informative. Thank you for having it!
dolsonmorrison
01:18:57
I believe BSW students can automatically be in Phi Alpha as MSW - I was under the impression that once you become a member you're good. We do have students from other schools just pay our chapter fee
Michael Berghoef
01:19:40
Yes, lifetime membership!
dolsonmorrison
01:19:53
Susan- our BSW's going straight into MSW often run for office at the end of the BSW year so they can be on the board as an MSW
Francine Carter (she/her/hers)
01:20:14
Thank you! I need to run.
dolsonmorrison
01:20:29
our top 35% is 3.87. We have a small program.
Michael Berghoef
01:20:42
Thanks Donna - you are the best!
melissadbrown
01:21:07
I need to leave for an appointment--thank you for organizing this. It was great!
dolsonmorrison
01:21:10
I should say was 3.87 for our Winter induction
Curtis Proctor
01:21:17
Yes, we’ve started a program where Phi Alpha members will be “mentors” to Freshman and Sophomore.
Sung-Ju Kim
01:21:17
When 2019-2020 phi alpha awards(e.g., best chapter award etc,) will be announced?
Elissa Giffords
01:21:29

George Michelle D.
01:24:29

Curtis Proctor
01:24:38
Agreed, two orgs: SW club and Phi Alpha
Anairahe Rosenow
01:24:55
