Student Membership Support – is designed for students eligible for Phi Alpha membership whose situation makes it a challenge to pay membership fees. Each chapter receives 2 membershipsper academic year at no cost. Chapters are responsible for any chapter fees.
David Luciano
45:58
Can you talk a little bit more later about how to involve the Phi Alpha officers on a National Level?
David Luciano
47:30
The membership required for GPA is still 3.5 correct?
Lee Ann DeShong-Cook
47:41
Total "newby" here- can you point me in the direction of basic information?
Donna Cherry
48:07
The chapter handbook is online and has the formula, etc.

That is the power of zoom...it will help us involve students nationally!
Willa Casstevens
50:53
There no longer is a GPA for membership, correct?
Brittni Wexler (she/her)

Right - no longer GPA; it is now the top 35%
David Droppa

How to increase membership especially for incoming students. Our Student Social Work Association (SSWA) at FIU is the introduction for Phi Alpha. We encourage our SSWA members to join Phi Alpha. We need them to continue Phi Alpha as most of our Phi Alpha members are graduating (MSW or BSW)
Curtis Proctor
58:58
Our Phi Alpha is trying to start a mentoring program for social work courses at the undergrad level. Current and alumni members. It’s slow work, however.
Jay Gabbard
01:00:46
We are working on more collaboration on joint projects with all three of our student orgs-this is allows students to connect across programs and is also something to feature in accreditation and reaccreditation reports
David Luciano
01:01:06
Has anyone on campus conducted a virtual Zoom Awards Ceremony Induction given COVID? And if so, what would that Awards ceremony or structure look like? Are there specific or social distance guidelines that govern that kind of a virtual Zoom event?
Willa Casstevens
01:01:56
We did a spring virtual induction, which went very well.
Julie Kuhn
01:02:31
David, I'm also interested in this....how did you handle induction ceremony during COVID
David Droppa
01:03:06
We proposed a Zoom induction this past April, and our students decided to wait till fall and do it in person. David Droppa, Seton Hill University, Greensburg, PA
Curtis Proctor
01:03:32
We conducted online, and provided their family/friends the zoom link to attend.
Willa Casstevens
01:03:56
Ditto
Elizabeth Pringle-Hornsby
01:04:28
We did a virtual induction ceremony as well, It went really well. Students and their families really enjoyed and appreciated it.
Karen Zellmann
01:04:32
We had an induction ceremony on Zoom. Two alums facilitated the ceremony. Students seems to really enjoy. Students were told ahead of time how ceremony would go and to have a candle too light. Having the alums really made it special
Pam Saylor
01:05:28
This is a great idea, Karen. Thank you!
ronandelke
01:07:47
We did this as well as used the script. We didn't do candles either. Our chair did a small "charge" ...
Elizabeth Pringle-Hornsby
01:09:24
I agree, we had the same experience. For the candle you can use the battery operated one as well. Some students wore their regalia
Curtis Proctor
01:09:51
I like the alumni idea, too.
Curtis Proctor
01:10:51
We’re considering that too.
Susan’s iPhone
01:12:45
From Sue Bowden: One advantage of zoom induction ceremonies is they are cheaper! You don’t have to spend money on food! So you can have as many as you want!
Jay Gabbard
01:13:00
Good point Sue
Willa Casstevens
01:13:14
Yes!
Curtis Proctor
01:14:02
That’s why we went Spring only (when it “live”).
Jay Gabbard
01:14:53
$$$$$$ is tight!
Elizabeth Pringle-Hornsby
01:15:18
Thanks, everyone!
David Luciano
01:15:41
Given the changes to the GPA requirement, virtual and other changes, are the Phi Alpha Membership requirements available in the Phi Alpha Website?
Rochelle Bailey
01:16:43
Amen on the cost! I generally do the main meal and desserts, then current members bring a side- potluck style. Less hassle with food. How do you guys still make them feel special.
Julie Kuhn
01:17:28
Is there an informational video that Phi Alpha national has put together for universities/colleges to share?
Adele Crudden
01:17:39
We are about to have our first Phi Alpha virtual happy hour
Willa Casstevens
01:18:02
We sent out a schedule with their names on it, along with the invitation link for distribution. Officers & alums participated in the ceremony, as did faculty … it was scripted.
Donna Cherry
01:18:02
Yes, David, the handbook has the instructions, including how to calculate 35%. It’s available on the website. The direct link is https://secureservercdn.net/198.71.233.197/d9v.0de.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/2020-Chapter-Handbook-November-2019.pdf
Jay Gabbard
01:18:21
We always feature Phi Alpha at our BSW and MSW orientations and try to have a student speak about the benefits of joining
Donna Cherry
01:18:32
We are in the process of updating the handbook with more online content.
David Luciano
01:18:37
Thank you! Donna Cherry.

One member's family helped with the fall fundraiser last year, which made things more active.
Elizabeth Pringle-Hornsby
01:19:56
I think that was what my question was leading to as well.
Jodi Szabo
01:20:07
We have a points system
Susan’s iPhone
01:20:20
from Sue still: They do make people feel special but lots of clapping and smiles and upbeat speeches, easy to do on zoom, can help.
Rochelle Bailey
01:21:39
Thank you, Susan!
